Anonymized application scenario: Y-TZP zirconia plunger for high-pressure medical dosing pumps

Representative Y-TZP zirconia plunger concept for high-pressure medical dosing pumps, addressing friction wear, corrosion and seal failure with stainless steel.

Anonymized application scenario: This representative engineering case is based on typical design, material and machining requirements. It does not represent a specific customer project. Values below are engineering targets, not measured customer results.

Application overview

This representative scenario discusses zirconia plungers for medical instrumentation and high-pressure fluidics, where high-frequency reciprocation, saline and acidic reagents can cause wear and seal failure.

Engineering scope

This page does not claim customer-specific life, cost or production results; the values shown are design targets.

Challenge

In a representative medical pump application, 316L stainless steel plungers can experience seal failure and leakage due to micro-frictional wear and chemical corrosion. Typical engineering requirements include OD tolerance ±0.002 mm, cylindricity ≤0.002 mm, and a mirror finish Ra ≤0.05 μm to protect polymer seals.

Solution

The representative approach uses yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) for fracture toughness and wear resistance. Processing includes centerless grinding, multi-stage polishing and diamond lapping, with optimized end chamfers to protect dynamic seals during assembly.

Process

Drawing/DFM review → Y-TZP blank → centerless grinding → multi-stage polishing/diamond lapping → chamfer and edge finishing → dimensional/cylindricity/roughness inspection → clean packaging.

Inspection & compliance approach

  • CMM dimensional inspection per drawing; report available on request.
  • Surface roughness measured with a profilometer; Ra targets are project-specific.
  • Lot-specific material certificate; material grade confirmed against the drawing.
  • Life validation is application-specific; the test protocol is agreed per project.
  • RoHS/REACH declarations are reviewed per material lot where required; no blanket certificate is implied.
